TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Three train cars caught fire at Yogyakarta Station, also known as Tugu Station, on Wednesday, March 12, at approximately 6:44 AM. The fire was extinguished by 7:30 AM, with no reported injuries or casualties.
"There were two or three train cars. They were not yet assigned to any train service and were simply parked at the yard," Feni Novida Saragih, spokesperson for KAI's Yogyakarta Operational Region (Daop) 6, said on Wednesday, March 12.
The fire, which broke out in the eastern section of the station yard, was quickly handled by firefighters, preventing any disruption to train operations. Since the affected area was a stabling yard rather than an active railway track, train schedules remained unaffected.
KAI Daop 6 Yogyakarta confirmed that the fire damaged three reserve train cars parked in the station's eastern stabling yard. Firefighters responded swiftly, with the first fire truck arriving at 6:45 AM, followed by four more. A total of five fire trucks were deployed, and the flames were fully extinguished by 7:30 AM.
Feni said that KAI Daop 6 acted promptly, coordinating with the Fire Department to contain the blaze, which was quite substantial. By 7:30 AM, it was completely under control.
"There were no casualties in this incident, and train operations remained unaffected. Passenger services at Yogyakarta Station continued as usual," she said.
She added that authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and assessing potential damages.
