TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok is reportedly working on a new version of its app specifically for users in the United States, ahead of plans to sell its shares to a group of investors. The development was reported by The Information, as cited by Social Media Today on Sunday, July 6, 2025.
The report noted that the new version is being developed in line with a partnership deal with American investors and to comply with the requirements of the "Secure America from Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Apps Act."
Internally referred to as "M2," the U.S.-specific version of TikTok is expected to launch in early September 2025. American users will need to download the updated, separate app in order to continue accessing TikTok, with a deadline set for March 2026.
According to Antara, this move follows a statement made by U.S. President Donald Trump the previous Friday, in which he said that negotiations with the Chinese government regarding a potential TikTok deal would begin on Monday or Tuesday, July 8.
Trump added that the U.S. had already reached a deal involving the sale of the short-video platform.
Last month, Trump extended the deadline to September 17 for ByteDance, TikTok’s China-based parent company, to divest its U.S. assets.
Earlier, there were plans to create a new U.S.-based entity to manage TikTok’s operations independently, with the majority of shares owned by American investors. However, the plan was delayed after the Chinese government signaled it would not approve the move, following Trump’s announcement of increased tariffs on Chinese imports.
Trump has acknowledged that any deal involving TikTok would still require approval from the Chinese government.
