Let’s remind ourselves how Tottenham got here. They did, of course, finish 17th in the Premier League last season. Ouch.
But, in essentially sacking off the league, they put all their eggs into the Europa League basked, and boy, did it pay off.
Under Ange Postecoglou, they worked their way to the final and saw off Manchester United in a winner-takes-all game in Bilbao, with Brennan Johnson’s goal the difference.
That means Spurs returned to Europe’s top table, United ended up with northing, and the whole event had quite the knock-on effect.
While Postecoglou was sacked anyway, pressure continues to build on Ruben Amorim. But it also helped Spurs in the transfer market, they have had a good start to the seaso
n, and they are looking to fully kick on on the biggest stage.
