TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, arrived at Kuala Lumpur airport on Sunday, October 26, 2025, and was greeted by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. This marks President Trump's first Asia tour, which will cover high-stakes trade talks with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
As reported by Al Jazeera, Trump shook hands with Anwar as they exchanged words upon disembarking from Air Force One.
The two leaders smiled broadly as they continued to hold hands for a few moments.
Anwar then led Trump along the red carpet, introducing him to the attending dignitaries.
Trump then boarded the "Cadillac One", also known as "The Beast", to be driven to the venue of the 47th ASEAN Summit, which was attended by several international leaders.
Upon arrival, Trump's actions drew attention from the media and social media users as he joined in a dance while clenching his fists.
The US President showcased his signature dance while watching local performers during the welcoming ceremony at Kuala Lumpur airport.
The White House happily highlighted the moment by posting the recording of the dance online.
ASEAN Summit
In Malaysia, Trump is scheduled to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit - a meeting he has missed several times during his first term in office.
He will also sign a trade agreement with Malaysia and witness the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
"We will be signing the Peace Deal immediately upon arrival," Trump said on social media, as quoted by CNA about the ceasefire he helped mediate after the deadliest clash between Thailand and Cambodia in decades.
Trump said he hopes to meet with Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit to improve relations with the left-wing leader after months of hostility.
Stopover in Qatar
During a refueling stop in Qatar on the way from Washington to Malaysia on Saturday, Trump met with leaders of the Gulf emirate, who were key guarantors of the Gaza ceasefire agreement initiated by Trump.
"It is an honor. We have a great ally. He's a great ally. They are a great ally. And these are two great men…. I want to just say we express our thanks, and you have a safe Middle East right there, and you're gonna keep it that way for a long time," said Trump with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, as reported by Anadolu.
"I was thinking, we’re landing here, we’re going to fuel up, and it’s such an honor to have you on the plane," he said.
"What we’ve done is incredible. Peace to the Middle East and they were a very big factor in this and I just want to thank (them)."
Trump further stated that the U.S. and Qatar have done "a lot together, especially in the last year."
When asked if the ceasefire in Gaza would hold, Trump said: "I think it will hold. If it doesn’t hold, that would be Hamas. Hamas will not be hard to take care of very quickly. I hope it holds for Hamas too, because they gave us their word on something."
US Tariff Discussions
After Malaysia, Trump is expected to arrive in Tokyo on Monday, October 27, 2025, where the next day he will meet with Japan's new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi.
The U.S. leader said he had heard "great things about her" and praised the fact that she is a follower of the late Prime Minister who was assassinated, Shinzo Abe, with whom he had a close relationship.
Takaichi said she told Trump over the phone on Saturday that "strengthening the Japan-U.S. alliance is the top priority of my government in the diplomatic and security fields".
Japan has escaped the worst tariffs imposed by Trump on countries worldwide to end what he calls an unfair trade imbalance that "harms the United States".
The peak of this trip is expected to be in South Korea, where Trump will meet with Xi Jinping for the first time since he returned to office.
Trump is scheduled to land in the port city of Busan in the south on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, and will meet with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
