TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump said Saturday that he might consider rejoining the World Health Organization (WHO), just days after ordering the US to withdraw from the global health body over what he described as its mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises, Reuters reported.
"We might consider rejoining, I don't know. We might. They've got to clean it up," Trump said at a rally in Las Vegas.
The US is scheduled to leave the WHO on Jan. 22, 2026. Trump announced the move Monday after he was sworn in for a second term in the White House.
The US is by far the WHO's biggest donor, contributing about 18 percent of its total funding. The WHO's latest two-year budget, for 2024-25, is $6.8 billion.
Trump told the Las Vegas crowd that he was unhappy that the US paid more to the WHO than China, which has a much larger population.
He added that he would ask Saudi Arabia to invest about $1 trillion in the US, up from the $600 billion Saudi Arabia had already pledged.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told Trump last week that the kingdom wanted to invest $600 billion in investment and expanded trade with the US over the next four years.
Executive Order
In a move that shocked activists, international NGOs and human rights advocates, Trump signed an executive order that would pull the United States out of the World Health Organization (WHO) shortly after he was sworn in.
He said the organization “deceived us,” adding: “Everybody deceived the United States. It will not happen again.” Trump also accused the organization of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as other health crises.
The executive order would see the US withdraw from the WHO within 12 months, including stopping all financial contributions. The move is seen as a major blow to the WHO, as the US is one of its biggest donors.
WHO carries out vital work around the world, including health research, emergency relief, disease control, increasing access to essential medicines and monitoring and data collection.
