TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The approval rating of US President Donald Trump has dropped in recent days to its lowest level since the beginning of his second term. As reported by Fox News, this is triggered by the surge in oil prices and widespread rejection of the war he has launched against Iran, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday.

The poll, conducted over four days and concluded on Monday, showed that 36 percent of US citizens are satisfied with Trump's performance, down from 40 percent recorded in a Reuters/Ipsos poll last week.

The latest poll shows that only 25 percent of respondents are satisfied with the way Trump handles the cost of living, a crucial issue that Trump himself considers a key factor in his victory in the 2024 presidential election.

Only 29 percent of respondents are satisfied with Trump's economic performance, the lowest rating of his two presidential terms. This is even lower than the approval rating of any economic performance of his predecessor, former US President Joe Biden, according to the poll.

While the approval rate of Americans for the war in Iran is at 35 percent, down from 37 percent last week. About 46 percent of Reuters survey respondents said the war would make the US less safe in the long run.

Only 26 percent said the war would make the country safer, while the rest said the war would not make a difference.

Americans are feeling the impact of the skyrocketing gasoline prices due to Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global energy trade.

According to AAA, the average gasoline cost nationwide reached US$3.96 per gallon, up 35 percent compared to last month.

After more than three weeks of war against Iran, Trump faces growing calls from political allies, business leaders, and even his own MAGA ("Make America Great Again") base to end the conflict.

Several major MAGA opinion leaders have openly voiced their opposition, including former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon, political commentator Tucker Carlson, and media figure Megyn Kelly.
