TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nabila Aulia Hasrie, one of the Indonesian citizens (WNI) residing in New York, revealed the social impact of the immigration tightening policy implemented by the President of the United States, Donald Trump. The Columbia University student mentioned that the immigration policy has sparked racism in the U.S.
"Trump's policy has heightened negative sentiments and racial stigma against minority ethnic groups," Nabila said when contacted by Tempo via WhatsApp on Monday, February 17, 2025. She believes that Trump is very serious about enforcing immigration laws in the U.S.
The 21-year-old woman stated that minority individuals in physical appearance have become targets of racism due to this strict immigration policy.
"People who do not physically resemble Americans will become easy targets for residents, especially the white community," she said.
The Southeast Asian Studies student even revealed that this racism has the potential to target the campus environment as well. "Indonesian citizens in the U.S., even those with clear student or immigrant status, become more vulnerable to the negative sentiments of U.S. citizens," she added.
Furthermore, Nabila mentioned that many Indonesian citizens are still living in New York until now. According to her, Indonesian citizens with legal residence permits tend to be unworried about Trump's policy.
In contrast, Nabila warned Indonesian citizens without official documents to be cautious of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) checks. "They do not discriminate in apprehending illegal migrant workers," she said.
The Southeast Asian Studies student also revealed that the majority of immigrants captured by ICE are Latinos from Central and South America.
Moreover, Nabila stated that the Indonesian representatives in the U.S. have also reminded Indonesian citizens to carry identification cards wherever they go.
Before this, the Director of Indonesian Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (PWNI Kemlu) Judha Nugraha revealed that 4,276 Indonesian citizens in the United States were included in the final order of removal list. This order signifies that an immigrant does not have legal permission to reside in a country and must be deported.
"Based on information received by the Indonesian representative as of November 24, 2024, there are 4,276 Indonesian citizens listed in the final order of removal," Judha said during a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Thursday, February 13, 2025.
Furthermore, Judha explained that the 4,276 individuals are Indonesian citizens who do not possess valid immigration documents and still have pending status. He also mentioned that these 4,276 Indonesian citizens are part of the total 1.4 million immigrants included in the final order of removal list.
As an example, Judha cited the case of an Indonesian citizen with the initials BK in New York who was arrested on January 28 while fulfilling his annual report at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office. BK has been on the deportation list since 2009.
In addition to BK, there was also an Indonesian citizen with the initials TRN who was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 29. "Currently, we have information on only two detained Indonesian citizens. We will continue to monitor," he said.
Judha also reminded Indonesian citizens that they can report to the Indonesian representative in the U.S. in cases of arrest. He urged Indonesian citizens to understand their rights in the U.S. legal system. Judha also affirmed that the Indonesian representative in the U.S. will provide the necessary legal assistance.
