Trump Threatens to Send US Troops, Wants to Control 50 Percent of Ukraine's Minerals

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States Donald Trump is attempting to obtain 50 percent of Ukraine's rare minerals. He openly hinted at deploying US troops to guard Ukraine's rare earth minerals if there is an agreement with Russia to end the war.

Trump's statement was reported by NBC, citing unnamed American officials. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent presented the draft agreement to President Volodymyr Zelensky during a visit to Kyiv on February 12, 2025.

Zelensky refused to sign the agreement after Bessent's presentation. He said that he needed to study and consult with others, according to NBC, which cited eight US officials briefed on the meeting.

At the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky stated on February 14, 2025, that his lawyers would examine the documents submitted by Bessent in Kyiv and make some changes to it. He referred to the US proposal as a memorandum, not a security agreement.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised to mediate a quick peace deal to end Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine. Following earlier proposals to ensure US support for Ukraine in exchange for rare earth minerals, Trump claimed that Kyiv had basically agreed to a resource deal worth US$500 billion.

Ukraine has indicated that it is open to developing partnerships in resource extraction with the US and other allies in exchange for security guarantees, but the details of the agreement are still unclear.

According to The Economist cited by Antara, Scott Bessent, who visited Kiev last week, only gave Zelensky one hour to consider the agreement that would provide the US with unlimited access to Ukraine's mineral wealth. The report said that Zelensky initially expected Bessent to discuss sustainable financial support for Ukraine.

Instead of discussing financial aid, he was presented with a memorandum demanding rights to all of Ukraine's mineral resources, according to The Economist.
