Central Vietnam was hit by Vietnam's Typhoon Kajiki on Monday evening, causing at least one fatality due to flash floods and winds with speeds of over 130 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of residents were evacuated from the storm's path.

As reported by CNA, the typhoon-Vietnam's fifth typhoon this year-rattled the Gulf of Tonkin with waves as high as 9.5 meters before hitting the coast around 3 p.m. local time.

Almost 44,000 people were evacuated from the area while 16,000 military personnel were mobilized, and all fishing boats in the storm's path were called back to port.

Two domestic airports were closed, and 35 flights were canceled before the storm made landfall between Ha Tinh and Nghe An Provinces. Typhoon Kajiki demolished the roofs of over 600 houses, according to authorities.

"I've never experienced such strong winds in my entire life," said 38-year-old Nguyen Thi Phuong in Vinh City, the capital of Nghe An Province, which suffered widespread power outages on Monday night.

The Ministry of Agriculture reported one fatality, while at least 8 others were injured.

The typhoon made landfall with wind speeds between 118-133 kilometers per hour, according to Vietnam's National Hydrometeorological Forecasting Center.

"The risk of flash floods at night is very high, so we have to remain vigilant," said director Mai Van Khiem.

Vinh City, located by the sea, was submerged in floods on Monday morning, with most of its streets quiet as the majority of shops and restaurants were closed because residents and business owners sealed off their properties with sandbags.

"I've never heard of such a big typhoon coming to our city," said 66-year-old Le Manh Tung at an indoor sports stadium in Vinh, where evacuated families were having a simple breakfast of sticky rice.

"I'm a bit scared, but we have to accept it because this is nature-we can't do anything," he added.

"NEVER BEFORE THIS BIG"

Human-induced climate change is driving more intense and unpredictable weather patterns that can increase the likelihood of damaging floods and storms, especially in tropical regions.

"We usually have storms and floods, but never before this big," said 52-year-old refugee Nguyen Thi Nhan.

The typhoon's strength is expected to weaken after making landfall.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center stated that conditions indicate a "trend of increased dissipation as the typhoon system nears the continental shelf of the Gulf of Tonkin, where its heat content is lower".

The tropical resort island of Hainan in China evacuated around 20,000 residents on Sunday as the typhoon passed through its southern region.

The island's main city, Sanya, closed off tourist areas and halted business operations.

In Vietnam, over 100 people have died or gone missing due to natural disasters in the first seven months of 2025, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Economic losses are estimated to be over US$21 million.

Vietnam suffered an economic loss of US$3.3 billion last September due to Typhoon Yagi, which hit the northern regions of the country and caused hundreds of fatalities.
