TEMPO.CO, JakartaU.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed Indonesia's willingness to contribute to Middle East peace efforts and post-conflict reconstruction during a phone call with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

This was revealed by U.S. State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce in a press statement. Bruce explained that the two ministers discussed the importance of peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, including exchanging views on maritime security in the South China Sea.

“Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Sugiono recognized the importance of the U.S.-Indonesia relationship and affirmed the contribution of our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region,” Bruce said in a statement.

She further noted that both leaders expressed a shared commitment to prioritizing national economic growth and recognized the importance of collaborating to deepen trade and investment for mutual benefit.

Marco Rubio began his tenure as the top U.S. diplomat on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. He pledged to keep his department at the heart of U.S. foreign policymaking and execute what he said was President Donald Trump's aim of promoting peace through strength, according to Reuters.

Rubio, 53, is a Republican and was a long-time member of the Senate foreign relations and intelligence committees. He is a China hawk and staunch backer of Israel. The son of immigrants from Cuba is now the first Latino U.S. Secretary of State.
