TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - UEFA has launched an investigation into possible disciplinary violations by Real Madrid players following their match against Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
The game ended with Real Madrid securing victory in a penalty shootout.
In the match held at the Metropolitano Stadium on March 12, Real Madrid secured their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals after defeating Atletico in a penalty shootout with a 4-2 score, following a 2-2 aggregate.
Antonio Rudiger scored the decisive penalty goal and then led his teammates in a celebration dance around the pitch.
UEFA's investigation focuses on allegations of inappropriate behavior by Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior, and Dani Ceballos.
While UEFA did not specify the incidents under investigation, Spanish media reported that Atletico Madrid lodged a complaint regarding Real Madrid's conduct during their post-match celebrations.
Video footage captured several Real Madrid players dancing and making gestures toward Atletico fans, prompting some supporters to throw objects from the stands in response. Reuters has contacted Real Madrid for comment, while UEFA stated that further details will be provided in due course.
Players suspected of misconduct could potentially be absent from the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final at Arsenal's home ground on April 8, regardless of the imposed bans.
In a similar case pursued by UEFA in the Euro last year, Real Madrid player Jude Bellingham was handed a one-match ban with a one-year probationary period, as reported by ESPN.
Bellingham scored a goal in extra time for England to equalize in the round of 16 match against Slovakia when he directed his hand to his groin. England eventually won 2-1 in extra time.
For that incident, UEFA's disciplinary judge found Bellingham guilty of breaching basic principles of good conduct. The English midfielder was also fined €30,000.
