TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian peacekeeper serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed amid the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, as confirmed by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday, March 30, 2026.

I strongly condemn Sunday’s incident during which an Indonesian peacekeeper of UNIFIL was killed amidst hostilities between Israel and [Hezbollah],” he said on X social media platform on Monday morning, as quoted from Antara.

Guterres also noted that another Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper was "seriously injured" during the incident.

He expressed his condolences to the people of Indonesia, particularly the family and colleagues of the victim, and expressed hope for "full and fast recovery" to the injured peacekeeper.

According to Guterres, the incident is part of a series of incidents that jeopardize the safety and security of peacekeeping forces.

I call on all to uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety & security of UN personnel and property at all times,” Guterres' statement read.

Tensions have continued to escalate in the Middle East after the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, 2026.

Iran then launched retaliatory strikes against Israel and several countries housing U.S. military assets in the region.

The conflict spread to Lebanon after Hezbollah joined in launching attacks on several military targets across Israel.

Israel attacks on Lebanon have reportedly killed more than 1,000 civilians and injured thousands more.

Incidents along the Israel-Lebanon border also claimed the lives of UNIFIL personnel from various countries.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs previously emphasized that the safety of Garuda Contingent personnel remains a priority.

“The Indonesian government continues to closely monitor the situation and its impact on the Garuda Contingent,” the ministry stated in a release on March 14.
