TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is "deeply saddened" by the loss of life and widespread damage caused by the devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
As reported by the president of Venezuela's National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, the death toll from the destructive quake has reached 188, with injuries topping 1,520, as DW reported on late Thursday.
"[Guterres] extends his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured," spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a statement, as cited from Antara, quoting Xinhua on Friday, June 26.
UN agencies in Venezuela, including the Humanitarian Country Team, are mobilizing assistance and working closely with the Venezuelan government and local partners to support the response, the statement said.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is facilitating the deployment of urban search and rescue teams, and the secretary-general welcomed offers of solidarity and support from UN member states at this critical time, the statement said.
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reported that the Wednesday quakes in Venezuala could cause economic losses equal to as much as 7 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), according to preliminary estimates from the United States Geological Survey.
The US is sending resources to assess the extent of damage and provide aid. “Significant reconstruction will likely be necessary, and this will likely require foreign support, including from the US, regional actors, and international financial institutions," said Rachel Ziemba, economist and senior adjunct fellow at the Center for a New American Security.
"The government appears to have moved quickly to announce a reconstruction fund with support from the IMF [International Monetary Fund],” Ziemba added.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said his side should have a better understanding of what is needed in the next 48 hours.
