TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) reported on Thursday that more than 100,000 Palestinian students have enrolled in schools in Gaza since the new academic year commenced on February 23, 2025.
"As of yesterday, more than 100,000 students have enrolled in school following the start of the new academic year on 23 February," said UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric in a press conference, as reported by Anadolu on Friday, February 28, 2025.
He further noted that "to date, 165 public schools have reopened in Gaza. For most students, this will be their first time returning to in-person learning in 16 months."
Statistics from Palestine reveal that 85 percent of schools in Gaza are inoperable due to Israeli bombings.
The Gaza Media Office reported that at least 12,800 students, along with 800 teachers and administrative staff, have been killed. Additionally, 1,166 educational institutions have been destroyed during Israel's operations since October 2023. They estimated the losses in the education sector to exceed US$2 billion.
Dujarric also described the situation in the occupied West Bank as "deeply alarming". He said, "Israeli forces’ operations continued in Jenin, Tulkarm and Tubas, leading to further casualties and displacement, and hindering access to health care, water, electricity and other critical services."
Quoting the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Dujarric emphasized that "international law must be respected and civilians must be protected".
A ceasefire agreement took effect in Gaza on January 19, halting Israel's genocide, which resulted in the deaths of more than 48,360 Palestinian citizens, mostly women and children, and left the region devastated.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding its military actions in Gaza.
