TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has warned that children in Gaza are at risk of death from the cold due to the lack of adequate shelter.
"Gaza babies could die from the cold and lack of shelter," Philippe Lazzarini said on the X platform on Friday evening, December 27, 2024.
He added that shipments of winter supplies such as blankets and mattresses have been stuck for months, awaiting Israeli approval to enter Gaza. The Palestinian enclave has been under an inhumane blockade by Israel, which has been waging a genocidal war since the first week of October 2023.
Lazzarini called for an immediate ceasefire and urged that basic winter necessities be allowed in. Three Palestinian children have died in makeshift refugee camps in the past week due to the cold.
Previously, a two-week-old baby, Sila Mahmoud Al-Faseeh, died due to cold weather in a refugee camp in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis, on Wednesday, December 25, 2024. She was the second baby to die in the same camp after Aisha Adnan Al-Qassas on December 20.
The Israeli aggression on Gaza has killed more than 45,400 Palestinians and devastated the territory since October 7, 2023.
Last month, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant. They are accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel is also facing a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the war on the Palestinian enclave.
