TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States on Wednesday vetoed the Russia-backed UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Middle East and condemning attacks on civilians, as reported by RIA Novosti as cited by Antara.
Latvia also voted against the resolution, while four voted in favor. Nine countries abstained.
The document submitted by Russia requested "all parties" to immediately cease hostilities "in the Middle East and beyond."
The draft also condemned all attacks on civilians and called on the warring parties to return to diplomacy, without mentioning any specific countries.
In addition, the document also noted the importance of ensuring the security of all countries in the Middle East and beyond.
In its opening, the UN Security Council expressed sorrow over the loss of life in the conflict and reiterated the ban on the use of violence against the territorial integrity of a country.
Earlier on the same Wednesday, the UN Security Council adopted a Bahrain-drafted resolution demanding that Iran end its attacks on Gulf states.
However, the resolution did not mention the military attacks by the United States and Israel on the Islamic Republic, as reported by RIA Novosti correspondents.
Thirteen countries voted in favor of the resolution, while Russia and China abstained.
The resolution condemned Iran's attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan, and demanded that the attacks be stopped immediately.
However, the resolution also did not mention US and Israeli aggression, and did not even call on both countries to stop their attacks on Iran.
