Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 1,430

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The death toll from two major earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, has risen to 1,430. According to Al Jazeera, as of Saturday, more than 51,000 people were still missing.

According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the two earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, struck just 39 seconds apart. The 7.5 magnitude quake was centered about 23 kilometers southeast of Yumare, Yaracuy State, while the 7.2 magnitude quake was centered about 23.9 kilometers northeast of San Felipe, also in Yaracuy.

Limited Rescue Teams

The limited number of government rescue teams in several affected areas has forced residents to search for victims on their own. In the worst-hit areas, residents are digging through the rubble of buildings with their bare hands to find victims still buried.

Numerous humanitarian agencies warn that the chances of finding survivors are diminishing as the critical 72-hour rescue period following the earthquake is drawing to a close.

Although the government claims to have deployed a large-scale emergency response, some residents reported seeing only a handful of state rescue teams at the worst-hit areas.

Each person saved is a miracle,” said National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez. “We are not going to hide absolutely anything about the magnitude of this tragedy,” he said.

Venezuelan Receives Aid from 21 Countries

The Venezuelan government is distributing food and clean water to survivors in La Guaira. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez said the government is doing everything in its power during what she called “critical hours for rescuing people alive.”

She also welcomed the arrival of international rescue teams and humanitarian aid. Rodriguez said La Guaira has been militarized to expedite emergency response and ensure additional aid is on its way.

According to Anadolu Agency, Rodriguez said there have been around 430 aftershocks since the two main earthquakes struck Venezuela. She also said her country has received assistance from 21 international delegations that have sent more than 2,000 rescue personnel.

The aid includes 96 sniffer dogs, 40 cargo vehicles, 32 transport vehicles, 103.7 metric tons of search and rescue equipment, and three metric tons of medical supplies.
