TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As the final quarter of 2025 approaches, many people are planning year-end holidays, often including trips abroad. However, Indonesian travelers need to understand that entry regulations vary by destination. Not all countries grant Indonesian passport holders automatic visa-free access; some require a simplified permit like a Visa on Arrival or an Electronic Travel Authorization.

According to the 2025 Henley Passport Index report, the Indonesian passport ranks 70th globally, on par with Eswatini and Morocco. Indonesian passport holders have access to 73 countries with either visa-free entry, a Visa on Arrival (VoA), or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

Understanding Simplified Entry Methods

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

Visa on Arrival (VoA) is a type of visa obtained directly upon arrival at the destination country's airport, eliminating the need to arrange it beforehand at an embassy or through online channels. With VoA, travelers only need essential documents, such as a valid passport, a round-trip ticket, and proof of financial means or travel purpose, before processing the visa at the immigration counter.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is an electronic permit that allows tourists to enter specific countries without obtaining a conventional visa. Implemented in several nations, the ETA system serves as an initial screening step for visitors before arrival. This mechanism is designed to strengthen security and expedite the immigration process.

Unlike regular visas, applying for an ETA is entirely practical and done online. Applicants simply fill out the form, pay the administrative fee, and await approval, which typically takes a few hours to a few days.
