TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - When personnel from the Strategic Intelligence Agency (Bais) of the Indonesian Military (TNI) doused him with acid late on Thursday night, March 12, 2026, Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) Deputy Coordinator Andrie Yunus had just completed a joint investigation with the Fact-Finding Commission (KPF) into the August 2025 protests. The Fact-Finding Commission found indications of Bais involvement in the demonstrations that ended in unrest.
Andrie and the Fact-Finding Commission team—comprising several civil society organizations—had worked for five months. The team reviewed more than 100 police investigation documents, interviewed more than 60 sources, and traced information on riots that erupted in 18 cities across eight provinces. "The Fact-Finding Commission's report outlines the alleged involvement of Bais and devotes a separate subsection to it," said Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) member Daniel Winarta in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. TAUD is the coalition handling Andrie's case.
In the 138-page report, the Fact-Finding Commission wrote that the alleged involvement of Bais was supported by documentation, testimony, and statements from the TNI concerning operations other than war. On page 120, the commission stated that "the KPF assesses that Bais personnel and the TNI were negligent and failed to take the necessary steps to prevent the escalation of violence."
Muhamad Isnur, Chair of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), said Andrie's name appeared first in the Fact-Finding Commission document released to the public. According to Isnur, the team had in fact already implemented security protocols after the investigative findings were published. "The system was already in place," he said.
