TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has announced that a total lunar eclipse will take place on Friday, March 14, 2025. However, this celestial phenomenon will only be visible in Indonesia as the eclipse reaches the end of its penumbra phase, and even then, it will be visible only in the eastern regions.
"The areas to observe it are throughout Papua, North Maluku, Maluku, the eastern part of East Nusa Tenggara, a little to the east of Central Sulawesi, and the eastern part of North Sulawesi," the agency stated through their official Instagram account on Thursday, March 13, 2025.
The BMKG explained that a total lunar eclipse happens when the sun, Earth, and moon line up perfectly. This alignment causes the moon to move into the Earth's umbra, which is the darkest part of its shadow. Consequently, at the peak of the eclipse, the moon will appear dark within the area covered by the Earth's umbra.
This total lunar eclipse progresses through several stages: the beginning of the penumbra phase, the beginning of the partial phase, the beginning of the total phase, the peak of the eclipse, the end of the total phase, and the end of the partial phase. Though many of these phases will not be visible from Indonesia, the final part of the eclipse will be observable in eastern Indonesia around 18.00 Central Indonesia Time (WITA) or 19:00 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT).
According to the BMKG, four eclipse events are scheduled for 2025: the total lunar eclipse on March 14, 2025; a partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025; a total lunar eclipse on September 7, 2025; and a partial solar eclipse on September 21, 2025.
Of these, only the total lunar eclipse on March 14, 2025, will be visible from Indonesia, and even then, only from eastern Indonesia. However, this same eclipse will be visible in other parts of the world, including the Americas, western Africa, Europe, eastern Asia, and eastern Australia.
