TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The White House said it was relieved by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s decision to backtrack on his short-lived effort to impose martial law on the country.
"We are relieved President Yoon has reversed course on his concerning declaration of martial law and respected the ROK National Assembly’s vote to end it," said a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council to Anadolu on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, referring to South Korea by its formal acronym.
The spokesperson, who commented on the condition of anonymity, said that democracy is the foundation of the U.S.-ROK alliance and America will continue to monitor the situation.
A Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on early Wednesday morning passed a resolution to lift martial law after Yoon backtracked from his decision to implement it.
With that decision, martial law was effectively lifted from the country in accordance with the procedures stipulated in the Constitution.
"Martial law will be lifted immediately by accepting the National Assembly's (Parliament) request through a State Council (Cabinet) meeting," said Yoon in his second national address. This was just hours after declaring martial law claimed to save the country from anti-state and pro-North Korean forces.
Yoon had imposed martial law effective on Tuesday night for the first time in 45 years. However, 190 members—who were present for the meeting—out of 300-seat parliament members opposed his move, which compelled Yoon to abide by the decision.
After the declaration of martial law, all political activities, including that of parliament, local councils, political parties, and political associations, as well as demonstrations and rallies, were temporarily banned.
People celebrated after Yoon said he would comply with the parliament's decision. The president also said that the military had withdrawn from the parliament.
