TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eggs are an affordable source of protein rich in nutrients. In addition to containing amino acids to support muscle formation, tissue repair, and growth, the yolk is rich in choline (an essential nutrient for brain performance). As reported by Medical News Today, egg yolks also contain lutein and zeaxanthin to maintain vision, as well as a variety of vitamins (A, D, E, B12, K) and minerals (selenium, iron) that are important for bone health, immunity, and red blood cell production. Additionally, egg yolks contain healthy fats, including omega-3. Consuming eggs can increase satiety to aid in weight management and strengthen the immune system.
However, it turns out that egg yolks are not always safe to consume without limits by everyone. Some individuals with certain health conditions need to limit or even avoid them to prevent potential complications.
Here are the groups of individuals advised to limit their egg yolk consumption:
1. High Cholesterol and Heart Disease Patients
According to Times of India, although regular egg consumption is safe for most people, individuals with high cholesterol, a history of heart disease, or underlying conditions (such as familial hypercholesterolemia) should be cautious. Excess cholesterol can increase the risk of plaque formation in the arteries, leading to heart attacks and strokes.
Egg yolks contain high cholesterol; one large yolk (17g) contains around 184 milligrams of cholesterol, as reported by Medical News Today.
2. Type 2 Diabetes Patients
Type 2 diabetes patients need to limit egg yolk consumption because a high cholesterol diet can worsen cardiovascular complications in diabetes patients. Medical News Today also suggests that individuals at high risk of infection, such as those over 65 years old or with immune conditions, cook eggs until both the egg white and yolk are completely solid to avoid Salmonella infection.
3. Gout Patients
Egg yolks contain purines, compounds that break down into uric acid in the body. Excess uric acid can trigger painful gout attacks. Individuals susceptible to this condition are advised to limit purine-rich foods, including egg yolks.
4. Egg Allergy Individuals
Egg allergy is common, especially in children. While egg whites are often the main trigger, egg yolks can also be another cause. Allergic reactions vary, from mild symptoms such as skin rashes or digestive disorders, to severe reactions like anaphylaxis.
5. Individuals on Certain Medications
Some medications, such as statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs), require careful dietary management. Times of India emphasizes the importance of following professional medical advice to ensure that egg yolk consumption does not interfere with the effectiveness of the medication.
