TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The World Bipolar Day is commemorated every March 30th as an effort to raise awareness and reduce stigma associated with bipolar disorder. This moment presents an opportunity to deepen understanding, share experiences, and show support for impacted individuals.

As reported by the International Bipolar Foundation, the vision of World Bipolar Day (WBD) is to increase global awareness about bipolar disorder and eliminate the social stigma surrounding it. Through international collaboration, WBD aims to provide education and enhance public sensitivity towards this condition.

WBD is an initiative spearheaded by the International Bipolar Foundation (IBPF) along with the Asian Network of Bipolar Disorder (ANBD) and the International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD).

For those living with bipolar disorder, World Bipolar Day provides an opportunity to connect with others, access beneficial resources, and receive support that can help improve the quality of life through proper treatment.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

As reported by Rethink Mental Illness, Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects mood, characterized by extreme emotional changes. This disorder can include episodes of mania, depression, and in some cases, psychotic symptoms.

Although the exact cause is not known, bipolar disorder is believed to be influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Managing this condition generally involves the use of medications and talk therapy to help control symptoms and improve well-being.

Individuals with bipolar disorder may experience:

- Feeling extremely happy, excited, or euphoric

- Increased energy and significant activity

- Reduced need for sleep without feeling tired

- Hallucinations or beliefs that do not match reality (in some cases with psychotic symptoms)

- Feeling extremely sad, hopeless, or empty

- Low energy and extreme fatigue

- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

Some people with bipolar disorder may feel stable between episodes, and the severity of symptoms can vary in each individual. However, if the symptoms are severe enough, this condition can significantly impact daily life, including work, education, and social relationships.

Types of Bipolar Disorder and Related Disorders

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are several types of bipolar disorder and related conditions, including:

- Bipolar I Disorder. Characterized by at least one episode of mania, which can occur before or after an episode of hypomania or major depression. In some cases, manic episodes can cause a disruption in reality (psychosis).

- Bipolar II Disorder. Characterized by at least one major depressive episode and one hypomanic episode, but never experiencing a manic episode.

- Cyclothymic Disorder (Cyclothymia). Characterized by recurring periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms for at least two years in adults, or one year in children and adolescents. However, these symptoms are not as severe as major depression.

- Other types. Including bipolar disorder or related disorders triggered by substance abuse, alcohol, or certain medical conditions, such as Cushing's disease, multiple sclerosis, or stroke.

Bipolar disorder can involve episodes of mania, hypomania (which is less severe than mania), and depression. These symptoms lead to unpredictable mood and behavior changes, often disrupting daily life.

Bipolar II disorder is not a milder form of bipolar I, but rather a different diagnosis. Although manic episodes in bipolar I can be very severe and dangerous, individuals with bipolar II tend to experience longer periods of depression.

Bipolar disorder can appear at any age, but is generally diagnosed in adolescence or early twenties. Symptoms can vary between individuals and may change over time.
