TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The underground river that flows into Pantai Baron in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, overflowed due to the flood that occurred on Friday night, October 28, 2025.

The overflow of the underground river water caused the sea water at Pantai Baron, located on the edge where fishermen moor their boats, to change color to brown until Saturday, March 29, 2025.

However, Pantai Baron is said to still be safe to visit because signs have been installed to prevent people from getting too close. 'It rained all night in the Gunungkidul area, causing underground rivers, including the one at Pantai Baron, to overflow,' said Koordinator Satlinmas Rescue Istimewa Wilayah Operasi II Pantai Baron Marjono on Saturday, March 29, 2025.

The rise of the underground river flowing into Pantai Baron had been detected since midnight on Friday. When heavy rain occurred, the search and rescue teams were on standby around the river. Marjono explained that events like this were not the first to occur. Usually, heavy rain causes the underground river at the beach facing the Indian Ocean to overflow.

The overflow of the underground river water appeared to gush from below up into the crevices of the cliffs and down to the beach area. This condition caused the beach to have two colors, bluish-green and brown. 'So, it is normal for this to happen when there is heavy rain in the north, such as in the Wonosari area, and the underground river water in the south overflows,' said Marjono.

Marjono doesn't know exactly how long this phenomenon will last. The rainfall is expected to remain high for several days. He assured that the beach area is still safe to visit for tourists. As long as tourists adhere to the rules and follow the directions of the officers. 'In general, the beach is still safe to visit, just follow the signs and the directions of the officers,' he said.

Gunungkidul Regency became one of the areas most affected by heavy and almost incessant rain that occurred throughout Friday, March 28, 2025. The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Yogyakarta stated that heavy rain in Gunungkidul Regency impacted several districts, such as Wonosari, Playen, Semanu, Paliyan, Semin, Patuk, and Purwosari. This extreme weather event also triggered floods in 18 points in Gunungkidul, with 71 houses submerged, two landslide points, and 15 residents trapped in floods.
