1.7 Million Online Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Still Lack BPJS Employment Protection

3 hours ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director General of Indonesia's BPJS Employment, Anggoro Eko Cahyo, stated that although there are approximately 2 million registered online motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers, only 250 thousand are currently enrolled in the BPJS program. This leaves 1.7 million drivers without protection.

"There are still 1.7 million people working with high accident risks, but they have no protection," said Anggoro during the 'Quo Vadis Online Motorcycle Taxi' discussion at Plaza BP Jamsostek in Jakarta on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

He elaborated that enrolled participants are entitled to benefits under the Work Accident Guarantee (JKK) and Death Guarantee (JKM) programs. The JKK covers all medical costs until full recovery in the event of an accident, while the JKM provides financial benefits to the heirs of deceased participants.

Anggoro noted that 7,200 out of the 250 thousand registered drivers have already received support from these programs.

"With benefits amounting to Rp104 billion," said Anggoro. He also mentioned that JKK participants may receive a Temporary Unable to Work Allowance (STMB) to help sustain their income during recovery.

To increase coverage, BPJS Employment is collaborating with app-based platforms to develop easier premium payment systems, including options such as automatic deductions.

"They can directly debit the premiums, deducting them daily," said Anggoro.

Meanwhile, Lily Pujiati, Chairperson of the Indonesian Transport Workers Union (SPAI), observed that awareness among online motorcycle taxi drivers about the importance of BPJS protection is growing. Many drivers, she said, are hoping for regulations that would make it mandatory for app companies to cover the premiums.

"For the time being, we encourage our friends to be Self-Employed Workers (BPU), so we pay for it ourselves. But when the regulations are in place and there is an obligation to have BPJS automatically, everything will be different," said Lily after the event.
