TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has pledged to improve the institution’s performance following days of large-scale protests in Jakarta.
She made the statement after paying a condolence visit to the family home of Affan Kurniawan, the 21-year-old online motorcycle taxi driver killed after being run over by a Brimob riot control vehicle during the August 28 protest.
“We will evaluate ourselves, make improvements, and listen more closely to the people’s aspirations,” Puan said in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
She emphasized that the DPR must contribute more effectively to national development. During the visit, Puan wore a headscarf and black attire as a sign of mourning.
She was accompanied by fellow PDIP legislators, including Said Abdullah, Adian Napitupulu, Maria Yohana Estie, Selly Andrina, and Dolfie Othniel. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung also joined the delegation.
Puan expressed regret that the DPR had not fully met public expectations. “On behalf of the House leadership and its members, I sincerely apologize if we, as representatives of the people, have not worked perfectly,” she said.
She also called on all elements of society to take part in nation-building, stressing the importance of dialogue and input from community leaders.
The protests, which began on August 25, were sparked by public anger over the planned increase in lawmakers’ allowances. Tensions escalated sharply after Affan’s death on Thursday, August 28. Affan, who was delivering food orders at the time, was caught in the crowd and fatally struck by a police tactical vehicle.
Since then, demonstrators from various groups have staged rallies at multiple locations, including the DPR building and Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters. Even into the early hours of Saturday, large groups remained outside the parliament complex before gradually dispersing after 05:00 AM.
By around 01:30 PM, however, traffic on Gatot Subroto Street became congested again as crowds reassembled in front of the DPR. Tempo observed that many wore the familiar green jackets of online motorcycle taxi drivers and parked their motorcycles along the roadside.
Solidarity actions also broke out in other cities, including Makassar, Bandung, Solo, and Surabaya.
