1. Prabowo Pays Condolence Visit to Home of Ojol Driver Killed During Jakarta Protest
President Prabowo Subianto paid a condolence visit to the home of the late Affan Kurniawan, a ride-share driver who was run over by the police mobile brigade's vehicle on late Thursday during a protest in Jakarta. Prabowo came with the Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Indonesian Military Commander General Agus Subianto around 10:00 PM local time.
"It was probably around 10 minutes," said a resident who shook hands with Prabowo when met at Affan's residence on Friday, August 29, 2025.
Meanwhile, the toll road tycoon Jusuf Hamka arrived earlier at around 7:00 p.m., when people gathered to pray for Affan after his passing, or doing tahlilan. Jusuf also came for Affan's funeral at the Karet Bivac Public Cemetery this morning.
Despite arriving separately, Prabowo and Jusuf departed together through the back road, or Kudus street, where the head of state also came through earlier.
2. Jakarta Protest Continues as People Attempt to Break Through DPR Gates
Thousands of protestors continue their attempt to break through the parliament complex gate well into Friday night, August 29, 2025. The protest, which escalated after the death of Affan Kurniawan, a ride-share driver who was run over by a police mobile brigade car, has been ongoing since 03:00 p.m. local time.
Until 09:00 PM, the protesters are still attempting to get into the parliament complex by pulling down the iron grilles with ropes.
They have successfully brought down a portion of the gate using this method, but this section was then guarded by soldiers from the Indonesian national armed forces (TNI).
At another section of the gate, people are attempting to break through using stones and other hard objects. They are trying to destroy the wall attached to the iron grilles in order to bring down the gate.
3. Despite Violent Protests in Yogyakarta, Malioboro Still Packed with Tourists
The turmoil due to the protest at the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) Police Headquarters on Friday night, August 29, 2025, did not affect the situation in the Malioboro area. According to Tempo's observation, the area, which is the main destination for tourists visiting Yogyakarta, appeared crowded and conducive.
The area of the Yogyakarta Regional Police Headquarters, which has become the center of protests, is located on the north ring road, directly across from Pakuwon Mall in Sleman Regency.
Meanwhile, the Malioboro area is located in the center of Yogyakarta City. It is approximately 10 kilometers away, or a 20-25 minute drive in smooth traffic conditions.
Several shops and shopping centers in the Malioboro area are also open as usual. Vehicles with license plates from outside Yogyakarta crowded the streets that provide access to Malioboro.
