TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Thousands of PT Sri Rejeki Isman Textile, or Sritex, workers will stage a rally in Jakarta in early January 2025. Sritex Group Workers Union Advocacy Coordinator Slamet Kaswanto said the demonstration was the workers' response to the Supreme Court's cassation ruling confirming the bankruptcy of the giant textile company.
"The action will be held in the first or second week (of January 2025). About 10,000 workers have expressed their willingness," he said when contacted by Tempo on Friday, December 27, 2024.
Slamet said that the workers are not only targeting the Supreme Court but also related ministries. In particular, the ministries appointed by President Prabowo Subianto to save Sritex, namely the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Manpower, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Trade, and the Ministry of State-owned Enterprises.
In addition, he said, thousands of Sritex workers plan to stage a protest in front of the State Palace and the Senayan parliament building. "We plan to hold the demonstration for two days because there are many targets. We will visit all of them," he said.
Slamet expressed his disappointment with the government. He believes the government has not taken any concrete steps until the cassation decision confirms Sritex's bankruptcy status. Meanwhile, the state of the Sritex factory is not optimal because of the lack of imported raw materials.
Sritex's import and export licenses are also currently frozen due to its bankruptcy status. This has led to an increase in the number of laid-off workers from the original 2,500 to the current 3,500.
The Supreme Court (MA) has officially rejected the cassation petition filed by PT Sri Rejeki Isman Tbk or Sritex against the Semarang Commercial Court's decision to declare the largest textile company bankrupt. The decision was read in a hearing on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
"Verdict: Reject," read the decision, as quoted from the official MA website, Thursday, December 19, 2024.
