TEMPO.CO, JakartaPositive emotions are emotions that create good feelings for someone who experiences them. With positive emotions, someone will feel optimism, enthusiasm, and self-confidence in doing something in everyday life, so that obligations can be carried out with full sincerity and responsibility.

According to the Gadjah Mada Journal of Psychology (2017), people who experience positive emotions show unusual, flexible thinking patterns, generate solutions to various problems, are open to information, integrative, and efficient. So, where are the countries with the most positive people in the world?

List of Countries with the Most Positive Population in the World

A global performance management consulting company from the United States, Gallup, released a list of the most positive countries in a report titled Gallup Global Emotions 2024. The poll was conducted on 146,000 respondents aged 15 and over from 142 countries and regions in 2023.

Gallup measures the positive and negative experience index based on intangibles, namely feelings and emotions that are never included in traditional economic indicators, such as gross domestic product (GDP). Each index provides a brief overview of an individual's daily experiences.

There are 10 questions on the positive and negative experience index asked by Gallup, such as "did you feel well rested yesterday?" and "did you experience the following feelings throughout the day yesterday? How about stress?". Then, the score is calculated by multiplying it by 100, where the higher the score, the stronger the positive/negative emotions.

The survey results show that Latin American and Southeast Asian countries have the highest positive experiences. In addition, Senegal is the only African country to make the list.

The list of countries with the most positive people in the world and their positive experience index scores are as follows:

1. Paraguay: 86.
2. Panama: 86.
3. Guatemala: 85.
4. Mexico: 84.
5. Indonesia: 84.
6. El Salvador: 83.
7. Costa Rica: 83.
8. Malaysia: 82.
9. Senegal: 82.
10. Philippines: 82.
11. Thailand: 82.

Gallup said that around seven out of ten people worldwide said they were well-rested (71 percent), experienced a lot of joy (73 percent), and smiled or laughed a lot (73 percent). Then, almost nine out of ten people felt treated with respect (85 percent).

With an overall score of 74, people under 30 were the most positive of all age groups. Furthermore, their positive emotional recovery was a year faster than the older generation.

List of Countries with the Most Negative Populations in the World

In addition to the list of countries with the most positive populations, Gallup also reported that there are ten countries with the lowest positive experience index scores. The countries with the lowest scores are dominated by the Asia and Africa regions.

Here is a list of the countries with the most negative populations in the world and their positive experience index scores:

1. Afghanistan: 38.
2. Northern Cyprus: 46.
3. Turkiye: 47.
4. Lebanon: 51.
5. Yemen: 53.
6. Lithuania: 54.
7. Nepal: 55.
8. Ethiopia: 55.
9. Egypt: 55.
10. Ukraine: 56.
11. Sierra Leone: 56.
12. Bangladesh: 56.

In its report, Gallup stated that Afghanistan's positive experience index score was slightly higher than in 2021 and 2022, after the Taliban took power. But the score remains the lowest in the world, as the vast majority of Afghans still live in misery.

A Gallup survey conducted in July, just before the second anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power, showed that Afghans generally still rate their lives as very bad and miserable. The percentage of Afghans who say they are miserable has not dropped below 90 percent since the Taliban seized full control,” Gallup said.
