TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Disease resembling the flu that has killed 143 people in the southwest province of the Democratic Republic of Congo in November, according to local authorities told Reuters.

Infected people have flu-like symptoms including high fever and severe headache, said Remy Saki, deputy governor of Kwango province, and Apollinaire Yumba, provincial health minister, on Monday.

A medical team has been sent to the Panzi health zone to collect samples and conduct analyses to identify the disease.

The situation is very concerning as the number of infected people continues to rise, said Cephorien Manzanza, a civil society leader.

"Panzi is a rural health zone, so there are issues with drug supplies," said Manzanza.

Sick individuals are dying in their own homes due to a lack of treatment, said Saki and Yumba.

A local epidemiologist said women and children are the most affected group by this disease.

A World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson said on Tuesday that the UN health agency had been alerted to the presence of this disease last week. The WHO said it is working with the Congolese Ministry of Public Health to conduct further investigations.
