154 Police Officers Mobilized to Secure Easter Festivities at Jakarta Cathedral

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police deployed 154 officers to secure the Easter celebration at the Jakarta Cathedral on Sunday, April 20, 2025.

"This is not just about maintaining security, but also providing a sense of peace. The state is present for everyone," said Grand Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro, Chief of the Central Jakarta Metro Police, on Sunday.

He explained that the Bomb Squad's Front Guard Anticipation and Threat Unit also conducted a sweep of the cathedral premises that morning to ensure safety.

The inspection found nothing suspicious or dangerous to the congregation. The security measures were implemented without firearms and prioritized a humanistic approach.

Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, Archbishop of Jakarta, said this year’s Easter is particularly meaningful as it coincides with the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year.

"It is considered special because it coincides with the special year of the Catholic Church to renew faith, ask for forgiveness of sins, and reconcile with God," he said in his official statement on Sunday.

The Easter message this year centers on caring for the weak and underprivileged. It reflects the belief that a spiritually maturing priest is one who serves the marginalized.

In a theological context, the Gospel of Luke (Luke 6:39-45) emphasizes the importance of introspection, reminding believers not to be quick in judging others and instead to be mindful of their own flaws (v. 39).

Unlike last year, this year’s Easter was celebrated in a peaceful and joyful social and political climate, free from the intensity of a national election.
