TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korean fire authorities reported at least 120 people died in the Jeju Air plane crash with flight number 7C2216, Sunday, December 29, 2024. The iron bird landed at Muan International Airport without wheels so that it went off the runway and exploded when it hit an airport wall.
South Korea's Ministry of Transport explained that Jeju Air 7C2216 flew from the capital Bangkok carrying 181 passengers. The plane attempted to land after 9 a.m. at Muan International Airport. Ministry data shows this is the deadliest air accident ever experienced by an airline from the Ginseng Country in nearly three decades.
Jeju Air 7C2216 is a twin-engine Boeing 737-800 type aircraft. Video footage shows the video sliding on the runway with the plane's wheels not out, then hitting an airport wall and exploding into debris. Several photos show smoke billowing into the sky and scattered plane debris.
Two crew members, a man and a woman, were rescued from the tail of the plane. Muan International Airport fire chief Lee Jung-hyun said the fire was extinguished by 1 p.m. The cause of the crash has not been announced.
"Only the tail of the plane is still visible. The rest of the plane is impossible to identify," Lee said.
Authorities have turned the rescue effort into a recovery operation. The force of the impact with the airport wall meant passengers were likely thrown from the plane into the area around the crash site.
The two crew members who were rescued are being treated in hospital with moderate to severe injuries. Witnesses said the area smelled of jet fuel and human blood. Rescue workers wearing protective gear and masks were combing through the debris. Hours after the plane crashed, hearses were lined up to carry bodies away from the crash site. Authorities said a makeshift mourning area had been set up.
