TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi predicted that the potential movement of people during the 2025 Eid al-Fitr period will reach 146.48 million or 52 percent of Indonesia's total population. This figure was obtained from a survey conducted by the Transportation Policy Agency (BKT) of the Ministry of Transportation.

"The survey results indicate that the peak of the homecoming exodus is predicted to occur on D-3 or March 28, 2025, with a potential movement of about 12.1 million people," said Dudy during the Coordination Meeting for the Preparation of Eid al-Fitr Transportation 2025 at the Ministry of Transportation on Friday, March 14, 2025, as quoted from a written statement.

Meanwhile, the peak of the return exodus is predicted to occur on D+5 or April 6, 2025. Dudy stated that the movement of people on that date is estimated to reach 31.49 million.

Regarding the distribution of people's movements, Dudy mentioned that West Java is the area with the highest number of travelers, totaling 30.9 million people or 21.1 percent. Then, there is East Java with a potential of 26.4 million people or 18 percent; Central Java with 23.3 million people or 15.9 percent; Banten with 7.9 million people or 5.4 percent; and Jakarta with 6.7 million people or 4.6 percent.

Furthermore, Central Java becomes the most visited destination, reaching 36.6 million people or 25 percent. Following that, there is East Java with 27.4 million people or 18.7 percent; West Java with 22.1 million people or 15.1 percent; Yogyakarta with 9.4 million people or 6.4 percent; and North Sumatra with 6.2 million people or 4.2 percent.

"Private cars are the most preferred mode of transportation, totaling 33.66 million or 23 percent," said Dudy. Next in line are buses with 24.76 million; intercity trains with 23.58 million; planes with 19.77 million; and motorcycles with 12.74 million.

In line with the potential movement of 146.48 million people during this Eid period, Dudy stated that his ministry has made preparations with local authorities, state-owned enterprises, and private stakeholders. The government will also implement several policies to anticipate the surge of homecoming travelers that could potentially cause congestion at various transportation nodes and road sections.

"Some of these include the implementation of a Work from Anywhere (WFA) policy, provision of free homecoming transportation, traffic engineering, and traffic management, especially in areas at high risk of experiencing traffic jams," said Dudy.
