TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - At least 569 Indonesian citizens have been caught operating illegal online gambling dens in the Philippines, the National Police Chief of International Relations Ins. Gen. Krishna Murti said on Wednesday, October 23.
"We found 569 Indonesian citizens working illegally as online gambling operators in the Philippines," he said at a press conference in Tangerang, Banten.
Murti added that they were caught in a raid conducted by the Philippine police in connection with an online gambling case involving an offshore gambling operator at the Tourist Garden Hotel in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu Province on Aug. 31, 2024.
The Indonesian citizens were not only involved as perpetrators but were also recruited from Indonesia, he added.
"They are not part of the victims of human trafficking, but they are the perpetrators who consciously offered themselves to work in the Philippines," Murti stressed.
He explained that the results of the large-scale operation conducted by the Philippine authorities led to the arrest of all the perpetrators; both the mastermind and the operators.
"They will be arrested and processed according to the rules, including two Indonesians who are currently detained," Murti said.
According to the case details, it has been determined that several hundred Indonesian citizens who were arrested will be deported. The Immigration Department will oversee the deportation process and ensure that it is carried out gradually, as stated by the official.
According to Murti, several Indonesian citizens involved in the case were repatriated to Indonesia in stages. In the first phase, 35 Indonesian citizens were repatriated. In the next stage, 32 Indonesians will be sent home on flights to Jakarta, Medan, and Manado on October 22 and 23, 2024.
Murti said his party was currently investigating the distribution of dozens of Indonesian citizens as online gambling operators.
"We should expose the organizers and the system. We will conduct a thorough investigation into this matter," he added.
