TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Microsoft recently released the Digital Defense Report 2024, a study that reveals the world faces more than 600 million cyber attacks every day. These attacks come from cybercriminals acting on their own, to state-based actors, targeting individuals, businesses, and governments worldwide.
In the report, as cited from Techspot, Microsoft highlights the increasingly sophisticated tactics of cyber attackers. High-level technologies, including Generative AI, are more frequently used to increase the success rate of attacks. As a result, cybercrime becomes more complex and difficult to handle.
One of the most alarming findings is the collaboration between criminal groups and state actors. Rarely seen before, they have recently been sharing tools and techniques, blurring the lines between criminal operations and state cyber operations.
Referring to the report, state actors like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China are mentioned as increasingly aggressive perpetrators in expanding their respective cyber operations. Their motives range from financial gain to intelligence gathering.
Microsoft also highlights state actors' methods when targeting the military sector and critical infrastructure. Countries targeted are usually involved in regional tensions, such as Ukraine, Taiwan, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates.
This global technology company emphasizes the importance of partnerships between the public and private sectors to address the escalating cyber threats. Such partnerships can result in policies or methods.
"Like enhanced multi-factor authentication and attack surface reduction rules," reads Microsoft's statement in the report.
As the cyber threat landscape grows, strengthening identity security becomes increasingly crucial. The same goes for user device security, and protection of cloud computing infrastructure.
