TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - If you are planning a trip in 2025, it is crucial to be aware of potential tourist taxes that may apply to your destination. Several popular travel destinations have implemented or are planning to implement these taxes to address issues such as overtourism and generate revenue for local communities.
A tourist tax typically involves an additional fee levied on tourists visiting a particular destination. These fees can be applied to various aspects of travel, including accommodation costs, entrance fees to tourist attractions, and even airline tickets. However, the specific implementation and amount of the tax vary between destinations.
Here are seven destinations that currently implement or plan to implement tourist taxes:
1. Venice
As reported by Express UK, beginning in the spring of 2024, Venice started charging a tourist tax for overnight stays, ranging from €1 to €5 (approximately Rp16,000 to Rp83,000) per night. Additionally, a daily tourist tax of €5 per day is imposed. Last-minute bookings may incur a higher fee of €10 per day (Rp167,000).
2. France
France, the world's most popular tourist destination, also imposes a tourist tax that varies depending on the location and type of accommodation. For instance, the tax for staying at a campsite is likely to cost less than one euro. This figure is far lower than that of a five-star hotel, which can reach up to €14.95 (approximately Rp250,000) per night.
3. Spain
Several cities in Spain have also increased their tourist taxes. In Barcelona, tourists face an additional €4 (approximately Rp70,000) per night, on top of the existing regional tourist tax. Staying in a five-star hotel in Barcelona can result in a total tourist tax of €7.50 (approximately Rp132,000) per night.
The Balearic Islands have also implemented a seasonal adjustment to their tourist tax, increasing rates during the summer months to mitigate the impact of overtourism, as reported by the Mallorca Bulletin.
4. Amsterdam
In October 2024, Amsterdam introduced a new tourist tax, which is now the highest in Europe. The hotel room tax has increased from 7% of the room rate plus €3 (Rp50,000) per person to 12.5% of the room rate. Furthermore, the tax for cruise ship passengers stopping at the port has been raised from €8 (Rp133,000) to €11 (Rp184,000) per visitor per day.
5. Portugal
Evora, a popular tourist destination in Portugal which is famous for its ancient ruins, plans to impose a tourist tax in 2025. The local government began planning it in 2019. However, the plan was stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the specific tax rate has not yet been announced, it is expected to exceed the initial proposal of €1 per person per night. The city of Faro in the Algarve region has also updated its tourist tax policy, introducing a seasonal variation. The tax rate increases to €2 (approximately Rp33,160) per person per night during the peak season (March to October) and decreases to €1 (approximately Rp16,808) during the low season (November to February).
6. Thailand
Starting in mid-2025, Thailand plans to impose a travel tax of 300 baht (approximately Rp140,000) on international arrivals. This tax will initially be levied on travelers arriving by air. The revenue generated from this tax will be utilized to fund travel insurance for foreign visitors and contribute to the development of the tourism sector.
7. Russia
Russia has implemented a tourist tax on hotel services and other forms of accommodation, effective from January 1, 2025. This tax, currently set at 1% of the cost of stay, is subject to annual increases, reaching 5% by 2029. The tax rate may also vary based on the season and the category of accommodation.
