TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vietnam defeated Thailand 2-1 in the first leg of the ASEAN Championships Cup or AFF Cup 2024 final at the Viet Tri Stadium in Viet Tri, Vietnam on Thursday night, January 2, 2025. Vietnam took an early lead through two goals from Nguyen Xuan Son alias Rafaelson, while Thailand came back through Chalermsak Aukkee.
Vietnam's start against Thailand was good for facing the second leg which will be played at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday, January 5, at 8 p.m.
Thailand had the upper hand in possession with 63 percent, but Vietnam often threatened with 20 chances, nine of which were on target. The Golden Star Warriors took the initiative and struck first, creating several chances. Thailand occasionally threatened the Vietnamese defense.
Vietnam could have taken a two-goal lead in the first half, but their lack of clinical finishing resulted in a goalless draw.
In the second half, Vietnam remained aggressive and created several chances. In the 59th minute, they broke the deadlock for the first time with a header from Nguyen Xuan Son after a pass from Vu Van Thanh, making it 1-0.
Nguyen Xuan Son had a golden opportunity to double the lead when he only had to beat Thailand goalkeeper Patiwat Khammai, but Patiwat blocked his shot. Thailand turned the tide and threatened through Ben Davies, who cut in from the right side of the Vietnamese box, but goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu was alert to the danger.
Vietnam doubled their lead with Nguyen Xuan Son's second goal in the 73rd minute. Thailand did not give up and managed to reduce the deficit through Chalermsak Aukkee's goal in the 83rd minute after a pass from Suphanat Muenta.
