TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Pantura People's Network (JRP) claims that they are the ones who built the 30.16-kilometer illegal sea fence in the waters of Tangerang Regency, Banten Province. The construction of this sea fence without a permit was previously widely protested by local fishermen.
The Coordinator of the Pantura People's Network (JRP) Sandi Martapraja admitted that the local community helped build the sea fence. Sandi said the sea fence was useful for preventing abrasion. "The sea fence that stretches along the north coast of Tangerang Regency was deliberately built independently by the community," said Sandi in Tangerang, Banten on Saturday, January 11, 2025 as reported by Antara.
Sandi assessed that the sea fence made of bamboo slats could prevent disasters, including by reducing the impact of large waves, preventing abrasion, and mitigating the threat of tsunamis. "Although it cannot completely hold back the tsunami," he said.
Sandi also claimed that the area around the bamboo fence could become a fish pond. "These embankments were built by the initiative of the local community who care about the threat of environmental damage," said Sandi.
The sea fence has now been sealed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP). The sealing took place on Thursday, January 9, 2025. KKP gave the builders and owners of the fence 20 days to dismantle the building they built without a permit. KKP is still trying to identify who is responsible for the construction of the sea fence.
Some fishermen welcomed the cessation of construction of the sea fence on the coast of Tangerang. Harun, a fisherman from Kronjo Village, Kronjo District, Tangerang Regency for example. "Yes, I am grateful for the firm action from the authorities and hope that the beach will be reopened for access to the sea," he said via Whatsapp to Tempo Saturday, January 11, 2025.
Harun asked that the sealing of the illegal sea fence not only be a gimmick from the government to simply calm the situation. "Fishermen actually want the bamboo fence to be dismantled immediately, they don't have to wait for the 20-day deadline. I'm worried it's (just) a gimmick," said Harun.
Previously, fishermen living in Tangerang Regency had protested the construction of a mysterious sea fence whose owner and builder were not yet known. "When we go out to sea at night, we are afraid of hitting the fence. We are always very careful when passing by," said one of the fishermen in Karang Serang Village, Tangerang Regency who did not want to be named, as quoted by Antara.
The fisherman said the existence of the sea fence makes it difficult for local fishermen to go out to sea. In fact, he said, every fisherman has to go far to another location to be able to fish.
The illegal sea fence was sealed by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries crosses the coast of 16 villages in six sub-districts in Tangerang Regency. The fence stretches across three villages in Kronjo District, three village areas in Kemiri District, four village areas in Mauk District, one village area in Sukadiri District, three village areas in Pakuhaji District, and two village areas in Teluknaga District.
