TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman said that Indonesia will achieve rice self-sufficiency within three months, ahead of the initial target. Amran stated that President Prabowo Subianto's initial goal was to achieve food self-sufficiency within four years.
Then, after 21 days, the target changed from four years to three years. Forty-five days later, the target was reduced to one year.
"Alhamdulillah, today, hopefully there are no obstacles, in around two months, approximately three months, Insha Allah, Indonesia will no longer import, hopefully there will be no extreme climate, and we will achieve self-sufficiency," said Amran in a press conference at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, October 9, 2025.
Amran mentioned that Statistics Indonesia recorded rice production data reaching 33.1 million tons. From January to November, estimated rice production is expected to reach 34 million tons. This figure is higher compared to the same period last year, which was 30 million tons.
"This is interesting, our production, as predicted by FAO, is the second highest in the world after Brazil. This is according to FAO," added Amran.
In addition to increased production, the government has noted improvements in farmers' welfare indicators. Amran explained that the farmers' terms of trade (NTP) have now reached 124.36. This value exceeds the government's target of 110. Meanwhile, rice prices experienced a deflation of 0.13 percent in September 2025, the first time in the last five years.
"These are our big dreams for the agricultural sector. After securing food, InshaAllah, this year will be secure, and then we will move to plantations and horticulture, and finally to livestock. We will solve them one by one," said Amran.
