TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Ministry of Agriculture denies the conversion of food estate land in Tajepan Village, Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan into 274 hectares of oil palm plantation by PT Wira Usahatama Lestari (PT WUL).

The Head of the Rice Field Expansion Task Force at the Ministry of Agriculture, Husnain, denies the presence of oil palm plantations in the food estate area. According to him, the project established during former President Jokowi's era was determined through the delineation of territories in collaboration with relevant ministries and institutions.

"So it’s not possible to have a palm oil permit there unless farmers sell or lease their land, which is beyond our control," said Husnain on October 31.

Husnain also mentioned that the government under President Prabowo Subianto no longer uses the term food estate but rather the rice field printing program. He stated that the program does not cover Tajepan Village, which was previously part of the food estate program. The rice field printings are planned to be established in the former Peatland Development Area, covering an area of around 200,000 hectares.

The rice field printing program is Prabowo's initiative to achieve national food self-sufficiency. According to Husnain, the government plans to create 3 million hectares of new paddies spread across Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, West Kalimantan, South Papua, and several other regions. In order to reach this target, the government will open 750,000 to 1 million hectares of land per year.

As cited from Majalah Tempo, the food estate program initiated by former President Jokowi faced failure in Central Kalimantan. Over 283.6 hectares of peatland was converted into paddies in the Kapuas Murung District, Kapuas District, Central Kalimantan.

After encountering failures in food production, a total of 274 hectares of rice fields have been transformed into an oil palm plantation right next to the rice fields owned by the Aneka Tarea Farmers Group, which once managed the food estate program.

As reported in Majalah Tempo, the issue of palm oil corporations entering the food estate expansion area was resolved through community partnerships with the companies. The government has also excluded the company's work site from the food estate area.
