TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - Indonesian airline AirAsia confirmed plans to expand its route network in 2025 by adding six new domestic and international routes. To support this expansion, the low-cost carrier will increase its fleet size by five aircraft, bringing the total number of operational aircraft to 30.
“Our plan is to add and activate the entire fleet, with five additional aircraft currently undergoing maintenance,” stated Veranita Yosephine Sinaga, President Director of Indonesia AirAsia, during a Ramp Check at Terminal 2F of Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Friday, December 27, 2024.
Veranita stopped short of disclosing the specific routes that will be added in the coming year. However, she confirmed that they will include both domestic and international destinations. “The finalization of these new routes is currently underway as we prioritize a successful conclusion to the current peak travel season,” she explained.
Throughout 2024, Indonesia AirAsia expanded its connectivity by launching five new international routes: Jakarta-Kota Kinabalu, Jakarta-Bandar Seri Begawan, Bali-Cairns, Bali-Kota Kinabalu, and Bali-Phuket, along with one new domestic route connecting Bandar Lampung and Bali.
To accommodate the increased passenger demand, Indonesia AirAsia operated a total of 32 flight routes during the third quarter of 2024, comprising 8 domestic routes and 24 international routes, with a total weekly frequency of 399 flights.
Veranita acknowledged that certain flight plans for 2024 were not fully realized due to several challenges, including delays in the procurement of aircraft spare parts.
“The obstacle has been the availability of aircraft spare parts, which have proven to be more challenging to obtain than anticipated since the COVID-19 pandemic,” she explained.
Veranita noted that the post-pandemic aviation market has experienced a global shortage of aircraft spare parts as airlines worldwide compete to reactivate their fleets. According to data from Airnav Indonesia, AirAsia currently operates the highest number of international flights but the fewest domestic flights among Indonesian airlines in 2024.
Despite this, Veranita expressed optimism that AirAsia will be able to expand its domestic route network in 2025, thereby contributing to the growth of the tourism sector and the Indonesian economy.
