Airfares Drop 10 Percent During Year-End Holidays, Transport Minister: 'We Will Reevaluate'

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi could yet to confirm if the reduction in airfare would continue after the Christmas and New Year holidays. So far, his ministry has announced a 10 percent reduction in flight ticket prices only valid from December 16, 2024, to January 3, 2024.

"We will see and reassess later after the Christmas and New Year holiday," Dudy said when met after a meeting with Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives at the parliament building in Senayan on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

According to the ministry's spokesperson, Elba Damhur, the airfare adjustment will only apply to unsold tickets. "For passengers who have purchased tickets for flights during this period, incentives can be provided according to each airline's policy if it is still possible," Elba said in Jakarta, Wednesday, November 27, 2024, as quoted from a written statement.

Elba claimed that the airfare reduction could boost the economy and tourism in Indonesia in the last quarter of 2024. He also hoped that this would be good news for the people.

Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives' Commission V, Mori Hanafi, asked the Ministry of Transportation to further examine the policy of lowering airfare prices. Although the decrease in airfares is desired by many parties, he said that there are several issues that the government needs to understand.

For one, Mori expressed concern that the reduction in airfare prices could affect the reduction in aircraft maintenance costs. "This actually endangers all of us," Mori said in a meeting with the Minister of Transportation, Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, Head of BMKG, and Head of National SAR Agency at the House building on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

He also urged the government to be more transparent in formulating this policy. In addition, they should listen to the issues faced by the airlines. Therefore, he suggested the formation of a working committee (Panja).

"We have to be fair. Not just talk about temporarily lowering ticket prices while the burden on them (airlines) remains high," the NasDem politician said.
