TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police added another suspect to the growing list of individuals involved in an online gambling case linked to the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi). This brings the total number of suspects to 15.
“Investigators have identified and successfully apprehended 15 individuals [involved in this case],” said Commissioner Wira Satya Triputra, Director of Criminal Investigation at Metro Jaya Police, during a press conference on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
Of the 15 suspects, 11 are Komdigi employees, while the remaining four are civilians. Three individuals, identified as AK, AJ, and A, are believed to be the masterminds behind the operation, overseeing the security protocols of the online gambling sites. The other 12 employees were tasked with compiling a list of active online gambling websites.
Suspect AJ would then filter the list, separating sites that had made monetary deposits from those that had not. Every two weeks, the list of inactive sites would be purged, and the remaining active sites would be forwarded to suspect R for blocking.
Wira declined to specify the amount of money paid to the syndicate by online gambling site owners. However, one suspect confessed to receiving Rp 8.5 million per site during a search at the Kominfo Satellite Office last Friday.
As previously reported, the Metro Jaya Police was investigating the involvement of Komdigi Ministry employees in online gambling cases. The employees are suspected of abusing their authority to protect and profit from these illegal gambling sites.
“They were tasked with blocking online gambling sites,” said Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Ariandi, Head of Public Relations at Metro Jaya Police, during a search operation on November 1, 2024.
