TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The city of Bandung is currently facing a waste emergency. This can be seen from the Sarimukti Landfill which can accommodate 145 truckloads per day in a month, or 1,250 tons of waste per day. In response to this situation, the newly elected Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, visited Padjadjaran University (Unpad) to discuss waste management and reduction strategies in the city of Bandung.
The discussion took place at the Executive Lounge, Rectorate Building of Unpad, Jalan Dipati Ukur No. 35, Bandung on Wednesday, February 12. They agreed to combine technological and social engineering approaches to tackle the waste issue.
"We must consider sociological, legal, psychological aspects, and lastly, the economic utilization of the waste itself," said Farhan, who is also an alumnus of Unpad.
Currently, the city of Bandung is striving for sustainable waste management. The Waste-Free Zone (KBS) program has begun to be implemented in several neighborhoods in Bandung. This program aims to reduce waste at the source and facilitate waste management and utilization downstream, making the environment cleaner and more sustainable.
Unpad has developed a new concept for waste management, which categorizes waste into food waste, recyclable waste, and residual waste. Unpad also endeavors to involve the community in education and internet of things (IoT) technology used to monitor and evaluate waste management in each area.
"At Unpad, there are already various research initiatives related to waste management, using various approaches. One of them is research on the development of models applied using a dynamic system approach," said Prof Tomy Perdana, Director of Cooperation and Alumni Partnership at Unpad.
Environmental Communication researcher and Journalism program lecturer at Unpad, Herlina Agustin, initiated the creation of a female mascot depicting the significant role of housewives in waste management and reduction. This shows that community participation is crucial to achieve maximum results.
In addition to community participation, the role of the government is also crucial. Through the collaboration between Unpad and the Bandung City Government, it is expected that a detailed roadmap will be formulated to implement more efficient and innovative steps in responding to the waste emergency in Bandung. This collaboration will combine technology, social engineering, and actively involve the community so that the waste management program is expected to be sustainable and have a positive impact on the people of Bandung.
