TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bandung City Government and the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) held an earthquake response simulation on Saturday, August 23, 2025, in the RW 15 neighborhood of Sekeloa Village. The exercise was a direct effort to mitigate the potential impact of the Lembang Fault.

The simulation began at 8:00 a.m. with the sound of a kentongan (a traditional wooden signal drum), struck by Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan. Over the next seven seconds, around 600 residents of the neighborhood practiced their response to a simulated magnitude 4.2 earthquake originating from a depth of 18 kilometers. The community was taught how to react and perform self-rescue procedures to prepare for a real emergency.

Community Preparedness

According to Mayor Farhan, such drills are vital for raising public awareness, especially in an earthquake-prone area like Bandung. "This exercise should not be a one-time event," he said in a written statement. "It should be repeated in all places and promoted through various media."

Didi Ruswandi, the head of Bandung City's BPBD, emphasized that community preparedness is the key to safety. "They need to know what to do," he stated.

To prevent injuries from collapsing buildings, residents were taught how to identify safe areas within their homes and workplaces. Didi stressed that every family member should know their designated safe spot to avoid panic. These safe spots can be under a sturdy table, in the corner of a room, or away from windows and other glass.

The city also provided other educational tips, such as placing stickers on windows to reduce the risk of shattering and keeping heavy objects low to the ground. Additionally, residents were advised to secure cupboards to walls to prevent them from toppling over. In collaboration with local creative communities, BPBD Bandung developed educational materials for children, including cartoons and storybooks.

Field Education and Recent Seismic Activity

Didi also mentioned BPBD's plan to conduct a geotrek, or a field education tour, to show the current condition of the Lembang Fault. Participants would be shown visualizations of ground surface changes, rock types, and potential vibrations.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has noted a series of recent earthquakes from the Cimeta segment at the western end of the Lembang Fault. These tremors included a magnitude 1.9 quake on August 14, 2025, followed by a magnitude 1.8 on August 15, a magnitude 2.3 on August 19, and a magnitude 1.7 on August 20.
