TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The deposed President of Syria, Bashar al Assad, and his family arrived in Moscow on Sunday and have been granted asylum, Russian state media report as cited by Anadolu on Monday, December 9, 2024.

“Assad and his family members arrived in Moscow. Being guided by humanitarian considerations, Russia has granted asylum for them,” Russian news agency TASS reported, citing a Kremlin source.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a written statement, clarified that this decision followed negotiations between the Assad regime and opposition groups. Russia also claimed that Assad hoped for a peaceful transfer of power.

“Russia has always spoken in favor of a political settlement of the Syrian crisis. We insist that the UN-mediated talks be resumed,” the source told the news agency, as quoted by Anadolu on Monday.

“Russian officials are in touch with representatives of armed Syrian opposition, whose leaders have guaranteed security of Russian military bases and diplomatic missions on the Syrian territory,” the source added.

The recent escalation of violence in Syria, marked by renewed clashes between government forces and opposition groups, prompted Russia's decision to grant asylum to the former president. Fighting erupted on November 27 in the rural areas west of Aleppo, rapidly intensifying and ultimately leading to the opposition's capture of Damascus on December 7.

Russia has consistently called for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict and has emphasized the importance of an inclusive political process in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, adopted in 2015.

While Russian military bases in Syria remain on high alert, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that there are currently no direct threats to Russian personnel. Furthermore, Russia has pledged to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of Russian citizens residing in Syria.
