Bekasi Flood Victims: Water Levels Rise Suddenly to 3 Meters Early Tuesday

2 hours ago 15

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Dwi Linda Sari was shocked when floodwater suddenly rushed into her house on Tuesday morning, March 4, 2025. Her house, located on Jalan Villa Jatirasa, Kelurahan Jatirasa, Jatiasih District, Bekasi City, West Java, was inundated by the flood, with water reaching up to three meters.

Her house is located 1 kilometer from the Cikeas River.

"The water suddenly came in at 2 am and no minutes to spare. So I didn't think about anything else. My focus was on saving my children and parents," Linda told Tempo on Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

Linda described the flood as the worst her house has ever experienced. She explained that her area had been hit by rain all night. At first, the water was shallow and clear, indicating it came from nearby puddles.

Linda and her family quickly secured their electronics. She mentioned receiving a warning in the neighborhood's WhatsApp group around 03:00 or 04:00 AM to prepare for rising water.

"But I never expected it to be this severe. Usually, the water from Bogor only reaches knee-deep, and that's still far because the river is about 1 kilometer away," Linda said.

At 02:00 AM, the water suddenly surged from the Cikeas River. Linda rushed to save family members and any belongings she could with her hands. She and other residents evacuated to higher ground. "I didn't have time to save important documents," she added.

The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency sent rubber boats for evacuation, as her two-story house was considered unsafe. Additionally, Linda mentioned that many of the residents are elderly.

"There are several elderly people who are severely affected because they had to be evacuated. Most of them sought refuge on the second floor. But it turned out that the second floor was also considered unsafe. Finally, they were evacuated by BPBD members and taken to the shelter," said Linda.

Linda said that this flood happened because the embankment of the Cikeas River could not hold the volume of water from Bogor. As a result, the water overflowed and flooded her residence.

Heavy rain on Monday night, March 3, 2025 to Tuesday early morning, March 4, 2025, caused flooding in the regions of Bekasi City and Bekasi Regency, West Java.

The Bekasi City Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) recorded that seven districts were affected by the flood, including East Bekasi, North Bekasi, South Bekasi, Medan Satria, Jatiasih, Pondok Gede, and Rawalumbu.

A total of 140 houses were inundated with water reaching 300 centimeters in height. The Bekasi City BPBD distributed logistical assistance and deployed a number of rubber boats to evacuate affected residents.
