TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Regent of Bekasi, Asep Surya Atmaja, stated that the Bekasi Regency Government in Indonesia will normalize the Cikarang Bekasi Laut (CBL) River as a long-term solution to the annual flooding in Srimukti Village, Tambun Utara District.
Asep stated that flooding in Srimukti Village is not a new occurrence, but rather a recurring problem due to the CBL River's suboptimal function as a main channel. According to him, as long as the CBL River's normalization is not fully implemented, the risk of flooding will continue.
"If the CBL River is not normalized, this will continue to be the case. This is not only in Srimukti, but also in Wanasari and other areas upstream from the CBL," Asep said while accompanying Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka to visit flood-affected communities in Srimukti Village on Monday, January 19, 2026, as quoted in an official statement.
Asep stated that Gibran also directly accepted the proposal to normalize the CBL River as an urgent need for the Bekasi community. The Bekasi Regency Government is currently identifying which river sections require normalization and the length of the segments to prioritize.
In addition to normalization, Asep plans to build a diversion channel as an alternative technical solution to manage the flow of water from small rivers flowing into the large-capacity CBL River. "Because the CBL River is large, small rivers end up queuing. One future option is a diversion channel. But we will first examine this technically with the relevant agencies," he said.
In the near future, the Acting Regent of Bekasi will hold a follow-up meeting with several technical agencies and local sub-district heads to identify obstacles in the field, including land, budget, and planning issues. In addition to the CBL issue, Asep touched on the continuation of the sheet pile driving project on the Gabus River.
Asep said the project has not yet been executed due to budget constraints. "One side has been installed, but the other side must continue. The planning is still in place, but the budget is not yet available. We will fight for this to continue," he said.
During the inspection, Asep ensured emergency response for affected residents. The local government, along with the police, distributed aid in the form of clean water, instant noodles, rice, blankets, and prepared ready-to-eat meals. Boats were also on standby, as the water level in some areas remained quite deep.
According to preliminary data, approximately 200 residents were affected in Srimukti Village. Overall, flooding in Bekasi Regency has affected 16 sub-districts, with a total of 54 inundated areas. "We are still providing emergency assistance, but the most important thing is a permanent solution. That's what we are and will continue to push for," said the Acting Regent of Bekasi.
