TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Engaging in exercise or physical activities is a way to keep the body healthy and fit, even while fasting during Ramadan. However, timing your workouts correctly is crucial during this period.
Choosing the right time can help you balance exercise with fasting obligations. Here are the best times to exercise while fasting.
1. Just Before Breaking the Fast
One of the best times for exercise during Ramadan is shortly before breaking the fast. Tony Arjuna, a lecturer in the Department of Nutrition, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing at Gajah Mada University (UGM), explained that exercise during fasting can be done at the right time, such as close to iftar or after the tarawih prayer.
"If you want to exercise while fasting, it is ideal to do so close to the time of breaking the fast, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breaking the fast, or after tarawih," said Tony as quoted from the UGM website.
2. After Breaking the Fast
Exercising after breaking the fast is also highly recommended during Ramadan. Orthopedic specialist Achmad Zaki explained that the best time to exercise during Ramadan is a few hours after iftar when the body has had enough time to digest food and regain energy.
Choose light or moderate exercise such as walking, cycling, yoga, or low-intensity strength training, but avoid pushing yourself to heavy workouts if the body is not ready. "Choose foods that contain complex carbohydrates, protein, and fiber to provide long-lasting energy," said Zaki.
3. Before Dawn Meal (Suhoor)
If you wake up early for suhoor, you can choose the time before suhoor to exercise while waiting for the suhoor meal to be ready. Exercising at this time can make your body feel refreshed during the dawn prayer and morning activities, even until the afternoon.
It is important not to overexert yourself with excessive exercise. Pay attention to your body's condition, making sure you do not feel unwell, weak, or dizzy after exercising, which could hinder your ability to perform fasting.
