TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning regarding the potential for high waves in several domestic waters. This warning, which fishermen and sailors must pay attention to, is valid until January 15, 2025.

Referring to the official statement issued by BMKG on Sunday morning, January 12, 2025, wind speed and sea wave height are influenced by cyclone seed 97S in the Indian Ocean south of Lampung. "There is the potential for very high waves, ranging from 4-6 meters in the North Natuna Sea," reads the BMKG early warning.

Referring to BMKG records, winds in the northern part of Indonesia are tending to blow to the northeast at a speed of 6-30 knots, while winds in the southern region move from southwest to northwest at almost the same speed. In addition to North Natuna, the highest wind speeds were observed in the Karimata Strait, the northern Malacca Strait, the West Indian Ocean of Aceh, the Java Sea, the South Indian Ocean of Lampung, and the South Indian Ocean of Java.

BMKG detected the risk of high waves of 2.5-4 meters in the southern Indian Ocean of the Mentawai Islands-Lampung, the southern Indian Ocean of Java-West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), the northern Karimata Strait, to the northern Pacific Ocean of Maluku-Southwest Papua. There is also a chance of increasing sea waves to a maximum of 2.5 meters in the northern Malacca Strait, the southern Karimata Strait, the Java Sea, the northern Makassar Strait, the Sulawesi Sea, the Maluku Sea, the western and central Arafura Sea, and several other areas.

"The potential for high waves in several areas can pose a risk to shipping safety," reads the BMKG's appeal.

BMKG asked fishermen to be aware of strong winds of more than 15 knots, as well as waves that are higher than 1.25 meters. Barges must also be aware of winds of more than 16 knots and waves above 1.5 meters.

There is also an appeal for ferry captains to be aware of wind speeds above 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters. Captains of large fleets, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, must pay attention to winds above 27 knots and wave heights above 4 meters.
